American baseball coach Eric Helmrich

American baseball coach Eric Helmrich will travel to Ireland as part of the Baseball United Foundation’s Baseball Exchange Program.

The Baseball United Foundation is proud to announce that we’re sending American baseball coach Eric Helmrich to Ireland. Coach Helmrich – who coaches at Iona Prep and is an instructor at Hardball Training Center in New York – will work with the Irish National Baseball Team and Little Leaguers in Ireland.

Baseball has been played in Ireland since the 1990s. There are currently several hundred children, teenagers, and adults playing baseball throughout the country. Baseball Ireland –is the recognized National Governing Body of Baseball in Ireland — is responsible for the development and promotion of baseball on the island of Ireland. Ireland’s National Baseball plays in international competition against other European countries.

Coach Helmrich’s visit to Ireland is part of the Baseball United Foundation‘s ongoing Baseball Exchange Initiative. In recent years, the foundation has brought players from Ireland to America, to provide an immersive baseball experience with local coaches, teams, baseball camps, and training facilities.

“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity,” said Helmrich, who is a guidance counselor at Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, NY. “I’ve never been to Ireland, but I have a passion for coaching baseball and I’d love to help Ireland’s baseball program in any way that I can.”

Helmrich played baseball at Iona Prep and Marist College, where he earned a B.S. in Psychology and was an All-MAAC conference selection. In addition to coaching at Iona Prep, he is a baseball coach and instructor at Hardball Training Center in Elmsford, NY.

Coach Helmrich will travel to Ireland on July 4, 2016 and spend one week in Ashbourne, County Meath — home of Ireland’s International Baseball Centre. His work will come at an important time for Irish baseball – the Irish National Team is preparing to compete in the European C-Pool Championships in late July.
